Yahboom JetBot with HD Camera Coding with Python for Jetson Nano
Jetbot is a multi-functional AI smart robot car based on JESTON NANO 4GB that responds quickly to a variety of Al visual gameplay. The vehicle is made of green aluminum alloy, coupled with a unique mechanical structure that makes it different in appearance from other cars. Equipped with 3-degrees of freedom lifting platform and 8 million HD camera, which can real-time view surrounding scenes. And it can accomplish Automatic Avoiding, Object Tracking, Color Recognition / tracking, detecting desktop edge to anti-drop, etc. You can also train a variety of different runway models and control JetBot complete the autopilot function. Programmable RGB strips are also designed on both sides to light up high-brightness colorful light in dark environments. Users can remote control it by APK or Handle, and we will provide a lots of reference tutorials for users.
The PC performs interactive programming through a web browser, providing basic motion control, use of AI frameworks, AI model training, full-scale variable-speed remote control of the joystick remote stick, automatic obstacle avoidance, automatic following, and automatic driving. Yahboom's self driving source code is suitable for Yahboom's customized track. You can also train your own jetbot's track, which is a challenging learning project.

Robot hardware: Excellent quality! The frame and components are a considerable improvement over plastic alternatives. The Yahboom Jetbot is made from thick aluminum, which provides excellent stability and ruggedness. Jetbot tracks are well fitted and performing. The component placement is logical and compact. The only exposed wire during operation is the cable to the camera, but it is sized not to be a hazard. The only complaint I have is the OLED display has no support and could get hit and break during rough handling. Nevertheless, this is a convenient readout for visibility into the robot status when running. The camera is mounted on servos with 3 degrees of movement, tilt, pan, and raise/lower.
Building the Robot: This was amazingly easy. It only took a couple of hours to assemble the entire robot. The method of marking the different hardware was brilliant and allowed for a confusion-free build. The build instructions are decent, with lots of accurate pictures to follow. Do heed the warning about placing the servos in the middle position during the build. I didn’t, and it was a pain to change later. Overall it was a fun and easy experience.
Image: The image is huge and takes a long time to download. Unfortunately, Yahboom does not offer an initial image on hard storage, so prepare for a long 32 to 64GB download to get the image.
Initial usage: I had some trouble getting the wifi up and running in the beginning. However, Yahboom has cleverly provided three initial connection methods (direct monitor/keyboard, wifi hotspot, or USB). A simple USB cord worked well for me. The operating system is relatively standard ubuntu, with industry-standard controls and packages, so getting it up and running once inside was easy and familiar. The remote control from an android app worked amazingly well through wifi, allowing for a quick demonstration of basic functions without programming. There are even built-in modes utilizing the AI engine in exciting ways.
Software: The stock robot package is written in python and well laid out into notebooks. The built-in dev environment Jupyter Lab makes it easy to start interactively through a simple HTTP connection. The code itself seems well documented and easy to navigate in the interactive environment. While I have not yet heavily modified the code or written my own, it looks easy enough to do so. I have not yet had a chance to explore AI packages, but they seem the stock packages and should be trouble-free.
Negatives: It would be nice to have a few simple sensors to augment the intelligence. The design seems to be around the AI as the interface to the real world through sight, which is great for a learning tool. However, I would like to see some basic avoid sensors and distance sensors to complete the robot ensemble. The documentation of the software can be a bit confusing at times. It seems to have been updated, and some references are misprinted. The initial hotspot for the wifi connection didn’t work from the Yahboom image, but the other methods worked perfectly. The wifi antennas were a bit looser than I’d like to see and difficult to attach firmly to the body, but not a serious concern.
Overall, this is an amazingly sturdy and capable robot in hardware and software. The intelligence capabilities are impressive. This is built onto a solid performing body that truly makes it a mobile intelligence device. The tools and interfaces are reasonably simple, given the capability. This robot will make a great platform to teach robotics and AI both separately and together. Teaching AI tends to be low-enjoyment book learning without a real-world interface. What better interface than a working robot!

- Aside from a Nvidia Jetson board that needs to be purchased separately, this kit does include everything needed in order to assemble a working system.
- The Jetson board gives it sufficient computing power to execute machine learning models (say, for recognizing objects) in real time, which perhaps is otherwise pretty hard to achieve with other cars based on Raspberry Pi.
- The "neck" (lifter) and "head" (camera) have six degrees of freedom, which makes it a lot easier to follow moving objects in its sight. Dress it up with some googly eyes and furry ears, and you can easily make a fairly expressive and cutesy robotic pet out of it.
- Since it runs Ubuntu 18.04, it is easy to deal with it if you have already some experience with Ubuntu. I was able to treat it just as another Ubuntu system on my home network and do ssh, copying files, run programs on it from the get-go.
- Very quick and knowledgeable support. I had some problem with the OLED display panel, but was able to get support over email/chat, then got replacement parts within days. Five-star service indeed.
Overall I have no problem putting it together and playing with the included demo Jupyter programs in no time. Converting the Jupyter programs to pure Python for my own purposes also worked well.
Features that I wish it will have in future versions:
- Wireless charging, so that it can be made to return to home base to charge itself automatically, like one of those robotic vacuums. This way it can then be made to do something useful, such as a room cruising sentry, a robotic pet, etc.
- Better support for audio beyond beeping, such as making tunes, play sound files, or do text-to-speech synthesis.
This kit should be great for anyone who wish to get some hands-on experience with robotics or machine learning. With some additional work to connect it up with a faster computer for doing machine learning model training, it might even be a good tool for more advanced purposes.
